Yao Jiaxin, the Xi’an Conservatory student who hit a waitress with his car then stabbed her to death in 2010, was sentenced to death by the Xi’an Intermediate People’s Court on April 22, 2011. Per China’s double appeals process regarding capital punishment, Yao appealed his case with the Higher People’s Court of Shaanxi Province, which upheld his death sentence on May 20, 2011.
Based on my understanding, there should be a second appeal conducted by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China. I don’t know when that’s going to happen, but I’m keeping my eyes open. It’d be interesting to see him get away with cold-blooded murder, if he does.
