I absolutely agree that she needs to get help–in second grade spelling–and that her husband should support her. What she needs is a few months of nice, soothing sessions with a patient, perceptive elementary school tutor/third grader, which, I believe, would be much less expensive than hiring a psychiatrist for the same amount of time. Depending on how old her kids are, she can bring them to her tutoring sessions, and they can all enjoy some quiet, constructive family bonding time. Who knows. Maybe it’ll even make them all literate someday.
